Antigua and Barbuda Expands Travel Horizons with Canada's eTA Program
Antigua and Barbuda citizens can now apply for Canada's Electronic Travel Authorisation — a meaningful expansion of mobility for the country's passport holders.

Some Antigua and Barbuda citizens may apply for Canada’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), but nationality alone is not enough. Canada’s current rules impose additional eligibility conditions, and the eTA may only be used for travel to Canada by air.
This piece explains what changed, how to apply, and what it means for current passport holders.
What eTA is
The eTA is Canada’s digital pre-clearance for eligible air travellers. It is normally valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. The border officer decides the permitted length of each stay on arrival.
Application is filed online, costs CAD 7, and is typically returned within minutes for clean files. The eTA is electronically linked to the passport — no physical document is required.
What this means for Antigua and Barbuda passport holders
The change created a narrower alternative to a visitor visa for travellers who meet Canada’s conditions. It did not make every Antigua and Barbuda passport holder eligible.
An eligible traveller can:
- Travel to Canada multiple times over five years on a single authorisation
- Apply online without obtaining a visitor visa for that air journey
- Plan trips with confidence that pre-clearance is in place

Who is eligible
Under Canada’s current rules, an Antigua and Barbuda citizen must:
- Hold a valid Antigua and Barbuda passport
- Have held a Canadian visitor visa within the previous ten years or hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa
- Travel to or transit through a Canadian airport; entry by car, bus, train or boat still requires a visitor visa
- Meet Canada’s general admissibility requirements
The official Government of Canada eligibility checker should be treated as the final test before any booking is made.
How to apply
- Confirm that you meet the prior Canadian-visa or valid US-visa condition and will travel by air
- Have your valid Antigua and Barbuda passport on hand
- Go to the official Government of Canada eTA portal (avoid third-party application sites)
- Complete the online form — identity details, travel intentions, declarations
- Pay the CAD 7 fee
- Wait for the decision before making a travel assumption

What this does not change
The eTA does not grant work authorisation or long-term residency, does not guarantee admission, and cannot be used to enter Canada by land or sea. Separate permits or visas may be required for work, study, family reunification or longer-term immigration.
What to do at renewal
The eTA is bound to the specific passport used in the application. When you renew your Antigua and Barbuda passport, the existing eTA becomes invalid and a fresh application is required against the new passport.
